What is actually behind that cover

On a car built in the last several years, the front bumper cover is holding, hiding or shooting through: the forward radar for adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking, usually behind the grille or the emblem; corner radars for blind spot and cross traffic alerts; ultrasonic parking sensors; and often a camera for the surround view system. Hyundai's position statement, quoted by I-CAR, is direct about it: when repairing a bumper, mask off the corner radar units or remove them from the vehicle to prevent contamination and paint overspray, and if a corner radar unit is damaged, contaminated or had paint overspray during refinishing, it must be replaced and recalibrated according to shop manual procedures. What to look for on your own estimate

You are looking for four things, and they are all short strings on a page you already have.

  1. The bumper operation. R&I means removed and reinstalled. R&R means removed and replaced. Both are on the manufacturers' aiming lists, so neither one makes the calibration question go away.
  2. A part type letter next to the bumper cover. OEM, Opt OEM, A for aftermarket, LKQ for recycled. Ford's statement approves a new Ford original equipment fascia where the substrate is damaged, and Honda's rear-bumper statement requires new Honda genuine covers where a replacement is needed, so on those makes the part type is directly connected to whether the radar works.
  3. An aiming or calibration line. The words vary by system: calibration, recalibration, aim, aiming, initialisation, learning. What you are checking is that one of them exists at all.
  4. A post-repair scan. Honda's July 2025 position statement is blunt: "Damage that requires the replacement of body parts always will require a post-repair diagnostic scan."
