How to Verify an Auto Body Shop's Registration in Massachusetts
Short answer: Massachusetts requires auto body repair shops to be registered under M.G.L. c. 100A, and registered shops carry an RS-prefixed registration number. Massachusetts is the one state on this list where we want to be especially precise about what our record is, so read the sourcing note below before you rely on it.
Who registers body shops in Massachusetts
Registration sits with the Division of Standards, in the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, under M.G.L. c. 100A. The Division of Standards maintains the list of registered repair shops under c. 100A, § 6. A registered shop holds a registration number in the form RS#######.
Two different rulebooks get confused here, including by us until 2026-08-04. Registration is c. 100A, a consumer-affairs statute. 211 CMR 133 is a different thing: a Division of Insurance regulation setting standards for the repair of damaged vehicles, read alongside the Auto Damage Appraiser Licensing Board's 212 CMR 2.00. An earlier version of this page attributed the Division of Standards' registration authority to 211 CMR 133, which merged two agencies into one sentence. The registration you are checking is the c. 100A one; 211 CMR 133 is why the list below is published where it is.
Where the official list is published: and a sourcing caveat
Massachusetts does not publish a bulk download of the Division of Standards registered-shop roster. What exists publicly is the list maintained and published by the Automobile Insurers Bureau of Massachusetts (AIB), which publishes the 211 CMR 133 registered-repair-shop lists as public per-section documents:

That AIB publication is the source behind the Massachusetts records in this directory. It is a published industry list of registered shops, not a state register lookup. The registration numbers in it are real RS numbers, but we are one step removed from the issuing authority, and we would rather say so than imply a direct state feed.
Because of that sourcing, Massachusetts records are used for the consumer map only. They are excluded from our commercial dataset entirely until the redistribution terms are cleared or the state roster is re-sourced directly.

AIB also publishes a separate "No Longer Registered" section. We deliberately do not ingest it. Publishing a shop as de-registered on the strength of a second-hand list is exactly the kind of claim that deserves a primary source, and we do not have one.
What we hold for Massachusetts
As of our 2026-07-24 build, the directory carries 1,476 Massachusetts registered auto body shops, all of them classified as body shops, the registration itself is body-specific, which is why the count is clean.
Massachusetts contributes no lapsed-credential figures to the State of Collision Repair 2026-Q3 report, for the reason above: we do not ingest the de-registered section, so we do not count it.

- Ask for the RS number. A registered shop will have one and will not hesitate.
- Cross-check it against the published AIB list linked above, which is organised by county section.
- For an authoritative answer, go to the Division of Standards. If registration status actually matters to a decision you are making (an insurance dispute, a large repair), confirm it with the state rather than with any published list, including ours.
- Use the rest of the record. Manufacturer certifications, years at the address, and federal environmental and safety filings are all independent of the registration question.
